Ipswich to host top sports in locker room forum: Fraser

Some of Queensland’s leading sports professionals will visit Ipswich next month to share playing, training and coaching tips with local athletes and clubs.

Sport Minister Andrew Fraser said the Locker Room program would cover coaching responsibilities, key issues and career pathways for officials, and the responsibilities of parents and spectators.

The presenters will include Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, Olympic basketball referee Scott Butler, national and international soccer league referee Mark Shield, basketball Olympian and former coach of the Brisbane Bullets Brian Kerle, Queensland Cup rugby league referee Adam Neale and sports psychologist Miranda Banks.

“Admission is free, so this is a great opportunity for local athletes, coaches and clubs to swap ideas and pick up a few tips from some of the best in the business,” Mr Fraser said.

The Locker Room will be held on Wednesday 1 November at the Ipswich International Hotel. To register or obtain more information, email rsvp@srq.qld.gov.au or phone 3239 0770.

Mr Fraser said the Locker Room series was another example of the Beattie Government’s commitment to building active, healthy communities across the State.

“These forums play a vital role in helping more Queenslanders get active by developing the skills of athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, administrators and their clubs,” he said.

“That is more important than ever as we tackle the global epidemic of obesity and associated health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

“We have now held over 160 Locker Rooms since the series was launched in 2001, involving more than 8,600 Queenslanders from Coolangatta to the Torres Strait.”

Locker Room details: Ipswich International Hotel, 43 South Street, Ipswich, Wednesday 1 November, 6-9pm. RSVP – Monday 30 October.
