Atherton to host top sports in locker room forum: Fraser
Some of Queensland’s leading sports professionals will visit Atherton next month to share playing, training and coaching tips with local athletes and clubs.
Sport Minister Andrew Fraser said the Locker Room program would cover health and fitness, sports psychology, developing a team culture, the benefits of nutrition in sport and the responsibilities of parents and spectators.
The presenters will include world power lifting champion and sports psychologist Katrina Robertson, former Australian softball captain and Olympic medallist Joyce Lester, basketball Olympian and former coach of the Brisbane Bullets Brian Kerle, sports dietitian and exercise physiologist Leanne Hammond, and Australian fitness leader of the year Sonya Barber.
“Admission is free, so this is a great opportunity for local athletes, coaches and clubs to swap ideas and pick up a few tips from some of the best in the business,” Mr Fraser said.
The Locker Room will be held on Tuesday 7 November at the Atherton International Club. To register or obtain more information, email rsvp@srq.qld.gov.au or phone 4091 2077.
Mr Fraser said the Locker Room series was another example of the Beattie Government’s commitment to building active, healthy communities across the State.
“These forums play a vital role in helping more Queenslanders get active by developing the skills of athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, administrators and their clubs,” he said.
“That is more important than ever as we tackle the global epidemic of obesity and associated health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.
“We have now held over 160 Locker Rooms since the series was launched in 2001, involving more than 8,600 Queenslanders from Coolangatta to the Torres Strait.”
Locker Room details: Atherton International Club, Kennedy Highway, Atherton, Tuesday 7 November, 6-9pm. RSVP – Friday 3 November.
