The Honourable Robert Schwarten
Firedraulics (Qld) Pty Ltd has been fined $12,000 for installing fire sprinklers at a ride at Movie World without the required licence, the Minister for Public Works and Housing, Robert Schwarten, said today.
Mr Schwarten said the fine followed an investigation by the Queensland Building Services Authority (BSA) into Firedraulics’ installation of fire sprinklers on the Scooby Doo ride at Movie World.
He said Firedraulics had carried out the installation for an amount of $240,240 without the required licence.
The case was heard in the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday October 19 before Magistrate Finger.
“I am advised that Firedraulics failed to appear, and the Magistrate gave leave to proceed with the matter in their absence,” Mr Schwarten said.
“This is the second fine for this company. The first case was heard in the Oakey Magistrates Court on July 22 in relation to work carried out at an abattoir in Oakey.”
Magistrate Finger took into consideration BSA submissions that Firedraulics:
- had disregard for the possible danger to children’s lives should the work it carried out be defective;
- did not assist the BSA in its investigation;
- had a previous offence;
- made no contact with the BSA in regard to this matter, and;
- failed to appear.
BSA General Manager Ian Jennings said free on-line licence searches could be conducted by visiting www.bsa.qld.gov.au
