The Honourable Rod Welford
Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced the reappointment of Lea Giles-Peters as the State Librarian of the State Library of Queensland for another three years.
Mr Welford said the State Library was about to enter one of its most exciting phases as it re-opened double its size next month.
“Ms Giles-Peters has successfully steered Queensland’s State Library during this important time, overseeing its redevelopment as part of the Government’s construction of a new arts precinct at the Queensland Cultural Centre,” Mr Welford said.
“For the past five years Ms Giles-Peters has provided the State Library with strong leadership, and a strategic and creative vision in realising the State Library’s reinvention as a leading information and cultural destination.
“She has been instrumental in advocating for greater public access by diversifying and expanding the State Library’s offering of services and facilities.”
Mr Welford said the State Library of Queensland would continue to make a significant contribution to the information and knowledge needs of the SmartState.
"I congratulate Ms Giles-Peters on her reappointment and I am sure the library and information industry will welcome her continued direction for a further term," he said.
Ms Giles-Peters has been reappointed for a further three years until 15 October 2009. Ms Giles-Peters was first appointed on 27 August 2001, and is the first woman State Librarian in the organisation’s 104 year history.
Ms Giles-Peters has extensive senior management and academic experience in librarianship, government, education and information systems.
The redeveloped State Library of Queensland will open to the public on 25 November.
