The Honourable Rod Welford
A new opera featuring a score by a Queensland composer will be a highlight of Opera Queensland’s program in 2007.
Arts Minister, Rod Welford, said Queenslanders would have the opportunity to experience world-class performances by some of the nation’s greatest opera singers as well as leading overseas artists.
“Our Government recognises the significant role performing arts companies such as Opera Queensland play in both the cultural and economic life of our state,” Mr Welford said.
“This year we have invested almost $1.9 million in Opera Queensland to enable more people throughout the state to experience the joys of opera.
“The company’s annual program has grown both in size and stature since its inception 25 years ago.
“Next year’s program again raises the bar of artistic excellence with not three, but four major productions including the premiere of a new Australian opera.”
‘The Love of the Nightingale’, featuring a score by Toowoomba-born Richard Mills and a libretto by British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, will premiere in Brisbane from 13-18 July.
Also included in Queensland Opera’s 2007 season are ‘Madama Butterfly’ by Puccini, ‘Nabucco’ by Verdi, and ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Engelbert Humperdinck.
Mr Welford said the 2007 program would also include a far-reaching regional tour of the company’s very popular production ‘The Food of Love’.
“From Cairns in the North, to Mount Isa in the west and Goondiwindi in the south, the 2007 program is set to enthral, captivate and inspire Queenslanders,” he said.
“’The Food of Love’ is a concert of opera arias and romantic songs featuring Opera Queensland artists. Local choirs will also be invited to participate in the performance in selected centres.
“Opera Queensland will also continue to provide opera education programs to Queensland schools as part of their 2007 season under its Exploring Opera! banner.”
