The Honourable Peter Beattie

The Tropical Cyclone Relief Appeal will open a fourth round of funding to help Queenslanders still experiencing financial hardship as a result of the cyclone that wreaked havoc across the region in the early hours of March 20 this year.

In Parliament this week, Premier Peter Beattie said the next funding round would open on Monday, October 16.

“Total donations to the Appeal Fund reached $21.604 million, with $10 million already allocated through three funding rounds,” Mr Beattie said.

“The generosity of Australians, the corporate community and governments has been so heartening,” he said.

“The appeal has stepped in and provided help to those members of the community with the greatest need.”

Distribution Committee Chairman Terry Mackenroth advised that $10 million has so far been allocated from the Appeal Fund.

‘The Committee has now approved a fourth funding round to assist those people who are experiencing continuing financial hardship,” Mr Mackenroth said.

“Help will be provided to those people who are still doing it tough to recover from the affects of the Cyclone,” he said.

“This includes replacing lost household items, minor repairs to property not covered by other assistance, and clearing dangerous debris from rural residential properties.

“As with the previous funding rounds, application forms will be available from Monday, October 16, next week at the Department of Communities’ one-stop-shops and via the Premier’s website.”

Mr Mackenroth said applications will close on 1 December 2006, and the Committee’s intention is to make payments in the lead-up to Christmas.
