James Cook University (JCU) has been recognised for its global success at the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards 2006 tonight, October 12.
Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie congratulated JCU for its win in the Education category.
“James Cook is Australia's leading tropical research university, offering more than 180 undergraduate and 140 postgraduate programs across a range of study areas,” Mr Beattie said.
“The university’s main campuses are in Townsville and Cairns, but there are also campuses in Mount Isa, Mackay and on Thursday Island. The university’s Brisbane Campus opened in early 2006, and its business and IT programs are taught at partner institutions in Sydney and Melbourne.
“In addition to having a leading reputation in the Australian education sector, the university has developed an international profile through its alliances with other education institutions and research centres from all over the world.
“JCU opened a Singapore Campus in 2003 and offers degrees across the Asia Pacific region including China, Fiji and Malaysia.
“Last year JCU joined a new global alliance of marine-focused institutions including universities in Germany, China, Korea, Japan, the UK and France. These alliances enable James Cook University to share its world-renowned expertise in tropical life science with an even greater audience.
“I congratulate JCU for taking its distinction in teaching and research to new heights of international success.”
Mr Beattie also congratulated Townsville company Sunferries for being a finalist in the Sports, Events and Tourism category of the State awards.
“Sunferries won this category in the regional export awards ceremony last month, and this a great credit to their business,” he said.
“The company operates five high-speed vessels which take passengers from the Breakwater Terminal to Magnetic Island up to 15 times a day. Each service is capable of carrying between 200 and 400 people.
“Sunferries has made the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island accessible to visitors from all over the world through its operations, which also include cruise and diving divisions.
“The company’s tourism services promote North Queensland to the rest of Australia and the world and are ov great value to the region.”
