Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

An Ipswich business has tonight been awarded one of the State’s highest accolades at the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards 2006.

Presenting the Awards at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight (October 12), the Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie congratulated New Hope Coal, based in North Ipswich, for winning the Minerals and Energy category.

“New Hope Coal is an independent, publicly-listed company which has open cut mines in Rosewood, Amberley and Acland on the Darling Downs,” Mr Beattie said.

“The company has a long history of exporting from Ipswich – the birth place of Queensland’s coal mining industry,” he said.

“New Hope was one of the first companies to successfully obtain trials of Ipswich coal in the Japanese market in the 80s, and today approximately 65% of its coal production is exported to Asia-Pacific markets including Japan, Korea, Chile and the United States.”

Mr Beattie said Queensland generated more than $35 billion in merchandise export revenue in 2005-06 – an increase of 34% on the previous year – which means the Smart State continues to have the fastest export growth in the nation.

“Coal was again Queensland’s biggest export industry,” he said.

“In fact, coal exports grew by almost 50% on the previous financial year to reach $14.5 billion thanks to the outstanding global success of companies like New Hope Coal.”

As well as its coal mining operations, Mr Beattie said New Hope Coal has interests in an export coal loading facility at the Port of Brisbane, and it has been involved in exploration and alternative energy activities in Queensland.

“Along with the other export award winners, New Hope Coal is sharing its innovation with the rest of the world and demonstrating to other Queensland businesses what can be achieved with great products and smart business skills.”

New Hope Coal was among 13 businesses throughout Queensland to be awarded for exporting excellence.
