Two local Sunshine Coast businesses selling their products around the world have won accolades at the 2006 Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards.

Announcing the winners at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight (October 12), the Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie congratulated the Botanical Food Company for its win in the Agribusiness category, and Oceanis Australia for taking out the Sports, Events and Tourism Award.

Mr Beattie also acknowledged Steve Irwin’s contribution to the promotion of Queensland to the world.

“Steve Irwin made an enormous difference to the Sunshine Coast and to Queensland by doing what he loved,” Mr Beattie said.

“The Crocodile Hunter Documentaries saw Australia Zoo exported to countries all around the world through the Discovery Channel.

“In 2004 Australia Zoo at Beerwah won the Premier of Queensland’sTourism Award and Steve also received our annual Special Award for Queenslanders because of his significant contribution to Queensland exports.”

Mr Beattie said Agribusiness Award category winner Botanical Food Company started in the mid 1990s when two leading Australian food scientists discovered a unique process to capture and store fresh chopped herbs and spices into a squeezable tube.

“This led to Gourmet Garden supplying a range of 12 products to Australia’s leading supermarkets including Woolworths, Coles and Bi-Lo in 1999,” he said.

“Today, the herb and spices range can be found in the fresh produce section of more than 13,000 supermarkets in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Western Europe.

“As a result of this success, the Gourmet Garden brand is the most widely distributed, branded, processed food product export in Australian history.”

The Premier said Sports, Events and Tourism Award winner Mooloolaba-based Oceanis Australia was the world's largest aquarium owner and operator.

“The company’s Mooloolaba aquarium, Underwater World, together with the adjacent Wharf Complex attracts almost 1.5 million visitors annually,” Mr Beattie said.

“Oceanis Australia also owns and operates aquariums in Melbourne, Thailand, South Korea and China.

“It is now exporting its expertise in designing, building and running aquariums around the world and providing consulting services for the construction of the world's largest oceanarium in Dubai which will open in 2008.”
