The Honourable Kerry Shine
The Queensland Government has secured land for a new hospital at Yeppoon with laws passed by State Parliament today, despite Opposition attempts to block the move.
Natural Resources and Water Minister Kerry Shine said the legislation allowed the Government to acquire the almost three-hectare site at the corner of the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road and Hoskyn Drive at Yeppoon.
“The passage of the legislation honours the Government’s election commitment to pass laws to acquire the land and allow the work to build the new hospital to get underway,” Mr Shine said.
“I am disappointed the Opposition did not support the legislation and therefore, did not support the Government’s efforts to secure the preferred site for the new hospital.”
“The Opposition has tried to frustrate the Government delivering on its election commitment to build a new hospital at Yeppoon for the people of the Capricorn Coast.”
“In stark contrast to the Opposition, I commend the efforts of my parliamentary colleagues Paul Hoolihan (Keppel) and Robert Schwarten (Rockhampton) to champion the new hospital.”
Mr Shine said the legislation was necessary so the Queensland Government could acquire the land and build the new hospital.
“Once the Government assumes ownership of the land, Queensland Health will be able to access the site to undertake its detailed planning and immediately commence preparation for tenders for the development,” Mr Shine said.
