Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Eight leading state school education programs have been named winners of the prestigious 2006 Showcase Awards for Excellence.
Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, congratulated the schools whose innovative programs have taken out the State Government’s highest accolade for state schools.
“These awards recognise and reward the very best programs which are improving student performance from Prep to Year 12,” Mr Welford said.
“I want to congratulate each of the eight winners and 18 finalists for the significant differences they are making to the learning outcomes of young Queenslanders.
“Queensland state schools are leaders in education and these awards recognise those at the forefront of these outstanding programs.
“Each of the programs was developed with the passion, support and hard work of teachers, principals, school staff, parents and the wider community.
“Enthusiastic educators and supportive communities working together make a formidable partnership.”
The award-winning programs range from an intensive literacy project to a school that is the first of its kind in Queensland, assisting rural and remote students who would not otherwise have access to face-to-face secondary education.”
Mr Welford said each of the state winners received a $20,000 grant to further develop their programs.
“Our Government is building an education system that is providing young Queenslanders with the skills and knowledge they need for a successful future,” Mr Welford said.
“Initiatives such as our new Prep Year, the $1 billion ‘Tomorrow’s Schools’ modernisation program and the new Literacy Framework are being supported by dedicated teachers and innovative programs.”
The 2006 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools are proudly supported by Network Ten, The Commonwealth Bank of Australia, RACQ, The Courier-Mail, Media Monitors, Queensland University of Technology and RemServ.
