Minister for Natural Resources and Water
The Honourable Kerry Shine

The Queensland Government has honoured its commitment prior to the last election to introduce legislation to secure land for the new hospital at Yeppoon in central Queensland.

Natural Resources and Water Minister Kerry Shine introduced the legislation – Yeppoon Hospital Site Acquisition Bill 2006 – into State Parliament today for debate.

Mr Shine said the legislation was necessary so the Queensland Government could acquire the land and start the work of building the new hospital.

“Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan has made strong representations to the Government regarding the need for work on the new hospital to get underway to meet the needs of the Capricorn Coast region,” Mr Shine said.

The approximately three-hectare site is at the corner of the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road and Hoskyn Drive at Yeppoon.

“This site is considered the most suitable site for the new hospital that is required to cater for the growing Capricorn Coast region,” Mr Shine said.

Mr Shine said a dedicated piece of legislation, rather than relying on the processes of the Acquisition of Land Act 1967, would significantly shorten the time taken for the land to be available for hospital purposes.

“While we are seeking to shorten the normal process, the legislation will not impact on the current landowner’s right to fair compensation nor will it impact on their right to have the claim for compensation referred to and heard in the Land Court,” Mr Shine said.
