Queensland Ballet will continue its tradition of taking performances to regional audiences next year, Arts Minister Rod Welford said launching the 2007 program today.
“Queensland Ballet is one of the state’s flagship performing arts companies, presenting more than 100 performances each year,” Mr Welford said.
“It was the first ballet ensemble in Australia to tour regional centres and that is a commitment it will continue next year.
“For its regional tours in 2007, Queensland Ballet will take Romeo and Juliet to Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.”
Mr Welford said three newly-created dance performances would also feature in the 2007 Season program.
“Artistic Director Francois Klaus has put together two new works, Carmen and Beyond the Barre, while talented local choreographer Natalie Weir has created Petrushka,” he said.
“Traditional favourite The Nutcracker will round out the year, performing in Brisbane for the 2007 Christmas season.
“Queensland Ballet is one of only three professional ballet companies in Australia and its popularity is growing.
“Between 2003 and 2005 audience numbers grew from about 23,500 a year to almost 42,000.
“This is testament to the success of Queensland Ballet and the contribution it makes to Queensland’s cultural life.
“And this year, the company undertook their first overseas tour in 10 years, taking Queensland culture to Germany and Switzerland to appreciative audiences.
“They have been invited to return to Europe next year and will also be performing in Singapore.
“This is yet another example of the Smart State exporting its innovation and creativity overseas.”
