BATTEN DOWN FOR STORM SEASON

Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Pat Purcell
The start of storm season this week is a reminder for all Queenslanders to make sure they are well prepared for storms, Emergency Services Minister Pat Purcell said today.
“Queenslanders know that around this time of year when the temperatures start to climb, destructive weather is just around the corner,” he said.
“The summer storm season can bring heavy rain, strong winds, thunder and lightening and often hail – all of which have the potential to wreak havoc on our homes.”
Mr Purcell said that last year the State Emergency Service spent over 31,000 hours specifically repairing storm damage to homes
“Last year the SES responded to around 2000 calls for assistance that were due solely to storm damage. Obviously the weather is the key, but hopefully with a bit of preparation we can limit the amount of damage storms cause this season,” he said.
“The best approach to take is one of preparedness and I encourage all Queenslanders to do their part in ensuring their own safety and protection of life and property during storm season.”
Mr Purcell said by following a few simple steps, residents can greatly reduce the risks to family, pets and property.
“If you haven’t already done it, now is the time to check that your home is in a sound condition, especially the roof and eaves; you should trim any tree branches hanging over your roof, clear your gutters, drains and downpipes and clear your property of any loose items that may blow about,” he said.
“You should also check that you have adequate household and contents insurance and which hazards are not covered by the policy.
“It’s also a good idea to prepare an emergency kit with emergency phone numbers, portable radio, spare batteries and first aid kit and manual.
