Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
All Queensland employers and workers are being urged to make a difference to health and safety in their workplaces by getting involved in Work Safe Week 2006 from 22 to 28 October.
Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel today called for everyone to use the week to make their workplaces safer.
“Work Safe Week is a great opportunity to focus attention on the importance of putting safety first to reduce workplace injuries and deaths,” Mr Mickel said.
“It’s easy to get involved. You can attend a free industry workshop or small business information session being run by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland or organise an in-house activity.
“Doing something small for Work Safe Week can have a big impact on safety in your workplace and need not cost a lot of money or time.
“Some simple ideas include a safety talk, a suggestion box, recognising staff who follow safe work practices and distributing safety information.”
The week will focus on reducing impact injuries caused by workers hitting or being hit by objects, which account for more than 20,000 of the 85,000 workplace injuries reported in Queensland each year resulting in $60 million in compensation claims.
“Workplace health and safety is everyone’s business - workplace incidents have a huge impact on workers, family, friends, business, the community and the economy.
“Work Safe Week sends the message that workplace injuries and deaths should never be accepted as just ‘accidents’. They are almost always preventable by implementing good risk management practices.”
Workplaces can register their safety events , book a place in a free workshop and order information packs online at www.dir.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 369 915.
Work Safe Week is an initiative of Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, a division of the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations, and is part of Safe Work Australia Week.
