Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson
The Beattie Government will provide land for a new high dependency aged care facility in Gin Gin, Health Minister Stephen Robertson announced today.
Mr Robertson said Queensland Health would also allocate 10 high-care licences to Kolan Shire Council to help meet the growing need for residential aged care in the region.
“The land on the Gin Gin Hospital site is perfectly located near the hospital and the existing Kolan Gardens aged care home,” he said.
“A new aged care facility in Gin Gin will have direct impact on health services in the region because long term aged-care patients at Gin Gin Hospital will be more appropriately cared for at a nursing home.
“And it is very important that nursing home residents have convenient access to inpatient and outpatient hospital services.
“The Kolan Shire Council has made a convincing case for additional aged care accommodation and that’s why I am pleased to provide land for a new facility.”
Mr Robertson said it was now up to the Federal Government to fund construction of the new nursing home.
“With the land and necessary licences, the Gin Gin community can now seek Commonwealth funding to build the facility,” he said.
“The Queensland Government has shown its willingness to contribute to this project and I would now expect the Federal Government to live up to their aged care responsibilities to contribute capital funding towards construction.”
Mr Robertson said plans for the new $8.5 million Gin Gin Hospital and three staff accommodation units were finalised and would now proceed to tender.
“Construction will get underway in the New Year,” he said.
