A new code of practice for animals working in Queensland film and television productions will ensure high standards of animal welfare and safety are continued.

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) and the Queensland Government’s Pacific Film and Television, in consultation with animal welfare groups, have developed an animal welfare code of practice as a reference for film and television production companies to ensure the welfare and safety of animals used in the production of films.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries, Tim Mulherin, said the code showed Queensland was a State that valued the welfare of animals and ensured contemporary animal welfare standards in films.

“It is a useful source of information for the public as well as a set of guidelines for the film industry,” Mr Mulherin said.

Arts Minister Rod Welford said the Queensland film and television industry valued the welfare of animals and ensured best practices in film, video and television production.

“Queensland’s film policies are world’s best practice and enhance the State’s reputation as a first-class film destination,” Mr Welford said.

“Queensland has a strong national and international reputation for film and television production. As the industry grows so does the level of professionalism it demands.

“The community has reasonable expectations that animals used in film production are treated humanely.”

The code is not compulsory, however it forms the basis of duty of care obligations for animals used in film production. Any animal welfare infringements would be investigated under Queensland’s animal care and protection laws.
