Six Queensland companies were today honoured for forging greater trading links between Queensland and the United Kingdom.

Representing Premier Peter Beattie, Minister for State Development John Mickel applauded the efforts of the companies while presenting the Australian British Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) Export Awards.

The major honour went to Ingeus Ltd, which won the ABCC Exporter of the Year Award as well as the Emerging Exporter Award.

“Ingeus is a remarkable success story. This company, which finds employment for people generally excluded from the workforce, began life in 1989 with two staff working out of an attic in Brisbane,” Mr Mickel said at the awards ceremony at Brisbane’s Tattersalls Club.

“It now employs around 1200 people and operates from more than 65 offices in four different countries including Britain. Ingeus is the first Australian company to export ‘welfare-to-work’ based employment services and fully deserves the kudos it’s now receiving.”

The other companies honoured at the ABCC Export Awards were:

• Agribusiness Award - Botanical Food Company Pty Ltd (Palmwoods)
• Small/Medium Business Export Award - BSD Robotics (Acacia Ridge)
• Large Advanced Exporter Award – Cutting Edge (West End)
• Services Award – Shortcuts Software Ltd (Spring Hill)
• Tourism Award – Sunferries Pty Ltd (Townsville)

‘The ABCC Awards, which are now in their 12th year, promote business relations between Queensland and the United Kingdom and celebrate significant export achievements made by our companies into the UK marketplace,” Mr Mickel said.
