The Honourable Peter Beattie
Queensland Premier Mr Peter Beattie has applauded this mornings Champ Car Atlantic championship victory by Team Australia at ElkhartLake in Wisconsin.
Team Australia, which is co-owned by Queensland businessman Craig Gore, wrapped up the title with the help of driver Simon Pagenaud, who claimed a record $US2 million purse, which will be put towards a full-time Champ Car drive in 2007.
The Atlantic Series is the main feeder category to Champ Car and is regarded as one of the toughest and most competitive open-wheel championships in the world.
The result has provided fantastic momentum for Team Australia which will field two cars next month’s Lexmark Indy 300 on the streets of the Gold Coast for Toowoomba’s Will Power and ‘adopted’ Australian Alex Tagliani, who is married to former Miss Indy runner-up Bronte Kok.
“Team Australia really is something that Queensland and Australia as a whole can be proud of,” Mr Beattie said.
“To win the Champ Car Atlantic championship in their first year is a fantastic performance and Craig Gore and his Team Australia squad must be congratulated on their commitment to motorsport on so many levels.”
Minister for Sport, Mr Andrew Fraser said the victory was great news in the lead-up to this year’s Lexmark Indy 300 on the streets of the Gold Coast next month where Team Australia was also bound to make its presence felt.
“Everything points to this year’s Indy being the biggest motorsport event ever seen in Australia and we believe everyone will want to be a part of it,” Mr Fraser said.
“With Team Australia to cheer for in the Champ Car race, three V8 Super championship races and a host of other on and off-track entertainment, there is little doubt that the Lexmark Indy 300 offers one of the most spectacular shows in world sport.
“I suggest people get in and get their tickets as soon as possible and get out their green and gold.”
