The Beattie Government has allocated $10,000 to the Caxton Legal Centre in Brisbane to research and publish a booklet to commemorate its 30th anniversary this year.

The Attorney-General Linda Lavarch and Member for Brisbane Central, Premier Peter Beattie, said the funding would allow the centre, which celebrates 30 years of operation in September this year, to record its rich and impressive history.

Mrs Lavarch, who will attend the centre’s celebratory dinner tonight, said: “The Caxton Legal Centre was Queensland’s first community legal centre and its staff, volunteers and community partners have made substantial contributions to the legal landscape in this state.”

“Many well-known Queenslanders have been involved with Caxton, including Wayne Goss, Noel Nunan, Zoe Rathus, Peter Carne and Di Fingleton.”

“I congratulate the centre on its 30th anniversary and look forward to it continuing its vital work for many more years to come.”

Peter Beattie echoed Mrs Lavarch’s comments.

“It is important that we preserve details of the Caxton Legal Centre’s important achievements so we can appreciate where we’ve come and where we are going,” he said.

The research project is one of 44 initiatives worth a total of $1.49 million that have been funded this year from the interest generated by solicitors’ trust fund accounts.

The grants are funded through theLegal Practitioner Interest on Trust Accounts Fund, which is administered by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

In addition to the grant, the Department of Justice and Attorney-General contributed sponsorship of $2,400 to enable other community legal centres to participate in Caxton’s anniversary celebrations.
