Premier of Queensland
The Honourable Peter Beattie

The first Chilean national to achieve a PhD in Australia, Professor Victor Cubillos Godoy, has been awarded a Judges’ Commendation after being nominated for Outstanding Achievement by an International Student at the Celebrating International Education and Training Industry Showcase 2006.

Premier Peter Beattie said the Showcase is a wonderful testament to this important industry’s achievements and highlights the academic and cultural contribution international students make to Queensland.

“We are proud to welcome students from more than 100 countries to study with Queensland institutions and acknowledge the important contribution notable alumni such as Professor Cubillos make to the State, not only through education linkages, but also by raising Queensland and Australia’s profile,” Premier Beattie said.

After completing Bachelor and Master degrees in Veterinary Science at the Universidad
Austral de Chile (UACH), Professor Cubillos commenced his studies at the University of Queensland (UQ) in 1981 as one of the first three ELICOS students in Queensland. He was granted a UQ postgraduate scholarship and awarded his PhD in Animal Pathology in 1998.

He has since had a distinguished career as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at UACH among other positions. In June 2006 Professor Cubillos was elected as the Rector (President) of UACH making him the first Australian and Queensland educated person to hold a position at this level in Latin America.

According to the Australian Ambassador in Chile, Mr Crispin Conroy, Professor Cubillos is one of the most successful Chilean students from any Australian university who is currently in Chile.

“Professor Cubillos has been active in increasing education links between Australia and Chile, especially to further develop collaboration in agriculture and veterinary science,” Mr Conroy said.

“He is someone who values his time at UQ and who wishes to promote the State to other potential students.”

Professor Cubillos has maintained research-based links with UQ and Queensland, and has recently been developing collaborative links across a broad range of teaching and research areas. Professor Cubillos is an active alumnus and plays a leadership and mentoring role for UQ and Queensland alumni.

According to the Deputy Director of the Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education at UQ, Mr David Nelson, Professor Cubillos has been a true pioneer in developing education and research linkages between Queensland, Chile and Latin America.

“Professor Cubillos’ professional networks and influence are of great value for Queensland in expanding education, investment and trade with Chile and Latin America,” Mr Nelson said.

ICTE-UQ was the winner of the “Partnerships for Positive Outcomes” category of the Celebrating International Education and Training Industry Showcase which recognises best practice in working in international partnership to bring mutually beneficial cultural and/or economic outcomes through international education and training activities.

The institution was also Highly Commended in the “Taking Queensland to the World” category which recognises best practice in activities that promote and enhance Queensland’s reputation as a quality study destination in international markets.

In 2005, there were 75 students from Chile enrolled with a Queensland institution, the majority of whom where studying English language.
