Premier of Queensland
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Graeme Baguley, Head of International Student Services at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has been awarded the accolade for Outstanding Individual Contribution to International Education as part of the Celebrating International Education and Training Industry Showcase 2006.
The Showcase is the first event in Australian to profile institutions and individuals who are committed to enhancing the international student experience.
Premier Peter Beattie said the Showcase is a wonderful testament to this important industry’s achievements and highlights the academic and cultural contribution international students make to Queensland.
“There are so many people working at the coalface of the international education and training industry in Queensland to make the experience for international students memorable. Graeme Baguley is one of the industry’s pioneers in terms of providing services for international students,” Premier Beattie said.
Since 1987, Graeme Baguley has worked at QUT where he established the International Student Services unit, one of the first of such services in Australia.
During this time, Graeme created and continuously improved international student support programs that are proactive, innovative and responsive to the needs of international students. The programs have supported international students in making a smooth transition to life in Brisbane and helping them to overcome challenges and difficulties.
According to Ray Morley, Director of QUT’s Student Support Services Department, Graeme has demonstrated a deep commitment and dedication to the support of people from diverse cultures.
“Through his work in QUT’s International Support Services Area and long standing commitment to international education, Graeme has helped to ensure that thousands of international students have received an extremely positive experience studying in a major Queensland university,” Ray said.
“Taking this experience back to their families, colleagues and friends in their home countries is the best possible method of marketing Australia’s international education industry.”
Former colleague Marie Morrison said Graeme’s work at QUT has set a high standard of international student support.
“Graeme has fostered a strong tradition of collaboration among Queensland’s student advisers, sharing his concepts and materials and initiating joint projects with other tertiary institutions,” Marie said.
“He has earned the respect and admiration of staff both within and outside of QUT through generously sharing his time, knowledge and materials with his colleagues.
“His efforts have also supported the establishment of international support services at other Queensland tertiary institutions and his work continues to be used as the benchmark for international student services at other Queensland and Australian institutions.”
In addition to his work at QUT, Graeme is a foundation member of the International Student Advisors Network of Australia (ISANA) where he is currently national vice-president. He has also made extensive contributions to the migrant and ethnic communities of Brisbane.
QUT was Highly Commended in two categories: “Innovation and Creativity in the Learning Environment” which recognises best practice in developing and implementing innovative and creative student centred approaches to the design and/or delivery of international education and training services for the their Internationalising the Curriculum project; and “Taking Queensland to the World” which recognises best practice in activities that promote and enhance Queensland’s reputation as a quality study destination in international markets.
