Premier of Queensland
The Honourable Peter Beattie

The cream of Queensland’s international education and training industry have been acknowledged for their outstanding contribution to the industry at a ceremony at Parliament House.

The 2006 Celebrating International Education and Training Industry Showcase is the first event of its kind in Australia to recognise, celebrate and benchmark projects that demonstrate quality academic and support services being provided to international students.

Premier Peter Beattie said the Showcase is a wonderful testament to this important industry’s achievements and gives Queensland’s international education and training providers an opportunity to learn from their peers.

“The international education and training industry is worth an estimated $1.08 billion per annum to the State economy and attracted more than 55,000 international student enrolments in 2005,” Premier Beattie said.

“Sustaining this industry into the future will depend on our ability to understand, improve and promote the student experience.”

At the presentation ceremony, Education Minister, Rod Welford, said the awards recognised and celebrated the excellent work being done in the education and training industry to deliver quality services for international students.

“This event showcases our Smart State institutions and individuals who are committed to enhancing the international student experience and leading by example which builds our reputation internationally,” Minister Welford said.

“I’d like to congratulate all of the winners and nominees of the 2006 Celebrating International Education and Training Industry Showcase and encourage the industry to continue to strive for excellence and innovation as they work with students from around the world.

“International students make an important academic and cultural contribution to our state.”

The Showcase’s seven categories attracted more than 50 nominations from individuals and Queensland universities, schools and colleges - all are making outstanding contributions to the industry and demonstrating a strong commitment to international students.
