Minister for Transport and Main Roads Vaughan Johnson today confirmed that almost $200,000 would be spent upgrading the Maryborough West Railway station.

Mr Johnson said that the upgrade was expected to commence shortly and should be completed by September this year.

"Representatives from Queensland Rail recently undertook extensive community consultation meetings to gain input on issues relating to the upgrade of the station," said Mr Johnson.

"I am please to announce that the results of this consultation will result in almost $200,000 being allocated to the upgrade," he said.

Mr Johnson said that a scope of works identified the need for the following improvements:

an improved station entrance with a covered walkway from the car park to the platform; a shelter for setting down of passengers by buses and cars; additional platform shelters and seating; a new waiting area; new fencing; and improved signage.

The Minister said that he also appreciated the ongoing assistance from Mr Kev Mahoney, the endorsed National Party Coalition candidate for Maryborough.

"Following his representations to my office on behalf of the local residents, the State Coalition Government evaluated the situation and was able to deliver this upgrading for the station," said Mr Johnson.

Mr Johnson said that the upgrading would be the first step in establishing the Maryborough West Railway Station as the gateway to the Fraser Coast in time for the introduction of the tilt train services later in the year.

"Obviously I appreciate Kev's ongoing assistance and dedication to this issue, and he is to be congratulated for his hands-on' approach to addressing the concerns of all stakeholders involved in the planned improvements for Maryborough West railway station," said Mr Johnson.
