The Honourable Stephen Bredhauer
$5.6 million for Tin Can Bay Road works
Work will start next month on a major upgrade of the popular North Coast tourist route of Tin Can Bay Road, Transport and Main Roads Minister Steve Bredhauer said today.
Mr Bredhauer said the upgrade would improve safety and flood immunity for motorists.
He said the $5.6 million contract for the work, including the construction of two new concrete bridges, had been awarded to BMD Constructions Major Projects Pty Ltd.
This project is one of several to upgrade Tin Can Bay Road to cater for increased traffic volumes on this major tourist, agriculture and timber industries route, Mr Bredhauer said.
The works will also replace the existing timber bridge to improve flood immunity, he said.
Mr Bredhauer said the existing road and intersections would be reconfigurated.
He said work would start 3.5km from the intersection of Lillis Road through to 200m east of the intersection with Cedar Pocket Road.
The existing section will be realigned and rehabilitated and will include the construction of two new concrete bridges and associated road works to a width of 10 metres, Mr Bredhauer said.
He said an earlier project, that started in October 2001, upgraded an 8km section of the Tin Can Bay Road, starting 4km east of the Cedar Pocket Road.
Mr Bredhauer said work on the current upgrade was expected to continue until March 2003.
