NEW APPOINTMENTS TO THE JUDICIARY
Attorney-General Matt Foley today announced several new senior appointments to the judiciary. Justice Glen Williams has been appointed to the Court of Appeal, Ms.Anthe Philippides SC, has been appointed to the Supreme Court, Ms. Julie Dick has been appointed to the District Court and Ms. Christine Clements and Mr. Graham Hillan have been appointed to the Magistrates Court.
Mr. Foley said the appointments brought a wealth of judicial experience and insight into regional justice issues and practice to the Queensland bench.
Justice Williams, appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1982, was a member of the Queensland Law Reform Commission from 1976 to 1989, Chairman of the Queensland Law Reform Commission from 1993 to 1996, Chairman of the Judges Forum of the International Bar Association from 1996 to 2000, President of the Industrial Court from 1998 to 1999 and Chairman of the Statutory Rules Committee from 1998 to 2000.
Justice Anthe Philippides, a Barrister since 1984 and Senior Counsel since 1999, is President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, Honorary Vice-consul of the Republic of Cyprus, Brisbane, a Member of the Senate Standing Committee on Admiralty Rules and Director of the Australian Maritime Network.
Judge Dick, appointed a Barrister in 1975, has extensive experience in criminal law and was appointed the first Parliamentary Criminal Justice Commissioner for the State of Queensland in March 1998. She has been a member of the Advisory Working Group for the Criminal Code Review and Bar representative on the Criminal Case Management Committee which resulted in the successful Committals Project.
Ms. Clements, a Solicitor, has accreditation with the Family Court and has previously worked as Solicitor-in-Charge with the Bundaberg Office of Legal Aid Queensland. She is a Member of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia.
Mr. Hillam, a Solicitor, has been Acting Stipendiary Magistrate and Deputy Registrar at the Brisbane Magistrates Court and Clerk of the Court at Noosa Magistrates Court. He has also worked as Clerk of the Court at Inala, Cunnamulla and Julia Creek.
"The 20 female judicial appointments made during the term of this government have helped to redress the scandalous under-representation of women on the Bench." Mr. Foley said.
"These appointments bring the number of women on the Bench to 7 out of 24 Justices of the Supreme Court, 5 out of 35 Judges of the District Court and 14 out of 75 Magistrates in Queensland," he said.
