Country Roads Connect seals missing link on Daymar-Weengallon Road
- Bitumen sealing of the final section of Daymar-Weengallon Road is complete thanks to the Crisafulli Government’s Country Roads Connect Program.
- Country Roads Connect is funding 22 projects across Queensland to boost resilience and keep regional communities connected after they were neglected under the former Labor Government.
- The Crisafulli Government is delivering for regional and rural Queensland after a decade of decline under the former Labor Government left communities abandoned.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering long overdue upgrades to regional roads through its landmark Country Roads Connect Program, with sealing complete on the final stretch of Daymar-Weengallon Road in the Goondiwindi Regional Council.
The project delivers a fully sealed 30-kilometre section south of Weengallon, decades after works were started, helping locals, tourists, and freight operators get home safer and sooner.
Under the former Labor Government, regional communities were abandoned with roads left unsafe or impassable in poor weather, disrupting school runs, delaying freight, and creating longer travel times and uncertainty during the wet season.
The Crisafulli Government’s Country Roads Connect Program is designed to address these issues and seal ‘missing links’ across regional Queensland.
The Daymar-Weengallon Road project is a textbook example of how the program works, with the project jointly funded with Goondiwindi Regional Council.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the rollout of Country Roads Connect projects was keeping Queenslanders connected and safe on rural and regional roads.
“Regional Queenslanders told us they need roads they can count on in good weather and bad, and unlike Labor, we’re getting on with the job of delivering for communities who rely on the road network every single day," Minister Mickelberg said.
“Regional and rural communities across Queensland are benefitting from the investment in the road network they missed out on under the former Labor Government.
“Sealing roads boosts resilience, improves productivity and keeps communities connected to school, work, and local shops during the wet season.”
Minister for Regional and Rural Development Dale Last said the completion of the final section of Daymar-Weengallon Road was another example of the Crisafulli Government delivering the infrastructure regional Queenslanders need and deserve.
“Regional Queensland is an economic powerhouse of our state, and whether its agriculture, mining or manufacturing, reliable roads are critical to keeping our industries moving and our communities connected,” Minister Last said.
“For too long under Labor, regional communities were forced to make do with infrastructure that simply wasn’t keeping pace with their needs.
“The Crisafulli Government understands that strong regions mean a strong Queensland, and we are backing that commitment with practical investment that makes a real difference to the people who live and work outside the southeast corner.”
Member for Southern Downs James Lister said the Crisafulli Government was delivering on its commitment to keep regional Queensland moving.
“Goondiwindi, like too many regional towns, has spent years dealing with roads that failed the moment the weather turned, and we deserve better,” Mr Lister said.
“Sealing this stretch of road keeps our country economy and communities connected when the weather turns.
“This is about putting those communities first and backing the industries that keep Queensland strong.”
Councillor Jason Watts, who holds Council's Roads and Transport portfolio, said the completion of the multi-year project represents a significant investment in one of the region's key rural transport corridors.
"It's been a long process, but the completion of this final section is a fantastic outcome for our western communities and the road users who rely on this route every day," Cr Watts said.
"This outcome is a great example of what can be achieved through long-term planning, strong advocacy and partnerships between local, state and federal government."
