Games On! Round 2 boost for Cairns Surf Life Saving Club

  • Cairns Surf Life Saving Club secures Games On! Grassroots Infrastructure Round 2 funding to improve training and boost operations.
  • One of 72 grassroots sports clubs sharing in $30 million statewide Games On! program boost, funding new and upgraded lighting, courts, greens and more.
  • The Crisafulli Government is backing Queensland clubs and delivering new and upgraded sporting infrastructure legacy beyond 2032, after a decade of decline under Labor.

The Crisafulli Government’s Games On! Grassroots Infrastructure program is strengthening lifesaving at Palm Cove, with Cairns Surf Life Saving Club securing funding to improve training and boost operations.

The club will receive almost $500,000 for a new training room to be used for coaching, athlete development, officiating, volunteer training and club education programs, as well as a purpose-built storage area for surf lifesaving equipment.

It's just one of the 72 grassroots sporting clubs across Queensland to share in $30 million for new and upgraded facilities under Round 2 of the Games On! Grassroots Infrastructure Program.

A total of 119 projects are being delivered across the State under the first round of the $250 million Games On! program, with 40 projects now complete and 79 currently underway.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a Games of all of Queensland and a lasting legacy beyond 2032, after a decade of underinvestment under the former Labor Government.

Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander said Games On! was delivering for local clubs and strengthening grassroots sport across Queensland.

“Through Games On!, we’re backing local clubs like Cairns Surf Life Saving Club with the facilities they need to grow, thrive and support their communities,” Minister Mander said.

“We're delivering a Games for all of Queensland with a legacy that will last beyond 2032 and this funding will help the club improve training, support athlete development and give volunteers better facilities to build their skills and keep Queenslanders safe on our beaches.

“From Coolangatta to the Cape we’re backing local sporting clubs with the investment they need to improve their facilities and help more Queenslanders to get involved in sport.”

Member for Barron River Bree James said Games On! was delivering for grassroots sport in the Far North.

“There’s no doubt that Cairns Surf Life Saving Club plays a vital role in our community, with dedicated volunteers giving their time to help keep locals and visitors safe year-round,” Ms James said.

“I've been advocating for this support, and I'm thrilled to see the club receive funding through this round of Games On!, delivering improved sporting infrastructure that will benefit the community for many years to come.”

Cairns Surf Life Saving Club President Anthony Hannan thanks the Crisafulli Government for its support.

“This is a significant investment in our club, our facilities and the wider community we proudly serve, and we are incredibly excited about what this will mean for our future,” Mr Hannan said.

“Our facilities are used by a wide range of organisations, schools and sporting groups, helping create opportunities for people to be active, learn new skills, build confidence and connect with their community.

“We want our facilities to continue serving our community for generations to come, and this investment will help us do exactly that.”
