Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Brent Mickelberg

Major reconstruction works begin on Gillies Range Road, restoring safety for Far North Queenslanders along landslip site

  • Reconstruction works are underway on the Gillies Range Road to repair damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and following severe weather.
  • The project is jointly funded by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
  • Long‑term repairs will reduce the risk of future landslips and closures, restoring safety for locals, freight operators and visitors who rely on this vital Far North Queensland connection.

Long‑term reconstruction on the Gillies Range Road is underway, marking a significant step in repairing the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the severe flooding that followed.

Jointly funded by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the major works are across 19 damaged sites along the range, including several substantial landslips, to restore the road to its pre‑cyclone condition.

Following the completion of the slip repairs near Lake Barrine in 2025, this continuation of repairs on Gillies Range Road is expected to be complete by mid-2027, weather and site condition permitting.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the Albanese Government was committed to long-term recovery in the region.

“Addressing the widespread damage caused by multiple landslips is a massive undertaking and these works mark a major milestone in the North’s recovery,” Minister McBain said.

“This reconstruction is about supporting recovery for communities across Far North Queensland following Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

“The Albanese Government will continue to work closely with the Queensland Government to ensure communities are supported throughout the recovery period.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said he is pleased the Crisafulli Government is restoring safety for Far North Queenslanders at the Gillies Range Road, an essential link between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands.

“These range roads are vital for local communities, freight and tourism across Far North Queensland,” Minister Mickelberg said.

“We’ve carefully coordinated works across all range roads to maintain safe and reliable access while this essential reconstruction is carried out.

“We thank North Queenslanders for their patience as we deliver long‑term repair works to restore safety and reliability on the road.”
