Safety upgrade for crucial corridor gains traction
- The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its election commitment to improve safety on Toowoomba–Athol Road.
- Labor failed to keep pace with regional growth in Westbrook and Wyreema, ignoring congestion and community safety concerns.
- The upgrade delivers a safer, more reliable regional road network that will drive far reaching benefits for locals.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future by commencing work on its election commitment to upgrade Toowoomba-Athol Road.
Safety and capacity planning is now underway for key intersections at Wyreema Road and Boundary Street South, areas that were long ignored by the former government during Labor’s decade of decline.
The upgrade builds on concerns from residents surrounding safety and congestion which were raised during consultation on the current upgrade works along Toowoomba-Athol Road, locally known as Anzac Avenue.
Toowoomba-Athol Road is a vital freight and commuter corridor connecting Toowoomba with the south-west, carrying a growing mix of urban and rural traffic as the towns of Westbrook and Wyreema expand rapidly.
The community will have the opportunity to provide further feedback as planning progresses, ensuring local knowledge helps shape practical, long-term solutions.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the Crisafulli Government was committed to hearing locals and acting on the needs of a community.
“We made a commitment to improve Toowoomba-Athol Road, and we are getting on with delivering it,” Minister Mickelberg said.
“We want the Toowoomba community to know their feedback matters, it’s not a box-ticking exercise.
“Upgrading this crucial corridor is about delivering safer, more efficient journeys for local families, freight operators and rural communities, while supporting a better lifestyle and a stronger regional economy.”
Member for Condamine Pat Weir said the additional planning reflected the community’s strong engagement in the project.
“Our community has been very clear about the need to address congestion and improve safety at these intersections,” Mr Weir said.
“This next stage of planning is about future-proofing Toowoomba-Athol Road so it can safely support our growing communities and keep our region moving.
Construction on the current safety upgrade along Toowoomba-Athol Road is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with this next phase of planning ensuring the network keeps pace with community growth.
