Glasshouse Theatre throws open the doors for Community Day celebration

  • Thousands of Queenslanders will experience Queensland Performing Art Centre’s (QPAC’s) new Glasshouse Theatre today at a free Community Day.
  • Visitors will enjoy free entertainment for all-ages and pop-up performances, while exploring the stunning foyers, world-class auditorium, and breathtaking views.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland’s future through a better lifestyle, thriving creative scene and world-class visitor experience in the lead up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Thousands of Queenslanders will be invited to explore Queensland’s iconic new Glasshouse Theatre today at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) free Community Day celebration.

Making QPAC the largest performing arts centre under one roof in Australia, the spectacular multimillion dollar theatre is set to attract global performances to Queensland and deliver a world-class visitor experience in the lead up to 2032.

The free community day includes performances by the Queensland Youth Orchestra, pop-up entertainment, free guided tours, and a discussion with leading architect Jayson Blight of Blight Rayner Architecture.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland’s future through a better lifestyle and vibrant arts scene, with the new theatre adding 1,500 seats to QPAC and welcoming around 300,000 extra visitors each year.

Minister for the Arts John-Paul Langbroek said the Glasshouse Theatre doors would swing open to the public for a first look experience.

“Glasshouse is a theatre for all Queenslanders,” Minister Langbroek said.

“This free Community Day is an exciting opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages and interests to experience the state’s newest architectural marvel.

“We’re expecting thousands of Queenslanders to show up and soak up the breathtaking experience.

“This theatre has a distinctly Queensland feel from the use of sustainable ironbark timber in the auditorium to the colourful carpets evoking our beautiful beaches and rainforests, and the skylights that let the sun shine through.

“Given the enormous interest, QPAC will provide even more opportunities to visit beyond the Community Day – including self-guided tours on weekends and Mondays, from March 14 until the end of this month.”

Following the Community Day, QPAC will present a diverse program of local and international productions for the new theatre in 2026, starting with Queensland Ballet’s epic Messa da Requiem later this month (27 March to 4 April).

The Australian-exclusive season of The Last Ship will premiere (9 April to 3 May), written, composed by and starring legendary musician Sting, and the world premiere of The Drover’s Wife – The Opera (13 to 22 May) will follow, directed by Leah Purcell and composed by George Palmer.
