Action on Cunningham Highway following decade of Labor neglect

  • The Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job of fixing the Cunningham Highway, long‑neglected during Labor's decade of decline.
  • Early works have begun on the most deteriorated section between Tregony and Gladfield, with major rehabilitation set to begin later this year.
  • These upgrades will make the highway safer for locals, freight operators, and travellers throughout the region.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future with the infrastructure needed for a growing population.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland’s future and fixing long-neglected sections of the Cunningham Highway by rebuilding deteriorated road surfaces and improving safety.

After years of patch‑ups and under investment under Labor, this vital freight and regional route – between Tregony and Gladfield - is finally receiving the long‑term rehabilitation it needs to be safer, smoother, and more reliable for Queenslanders now and into the future.

Works will be delivered in stages, with priority given to the most damaged sections, following extensive assessments of the highway’s condition after heavy traffic and extreme weather left drivers facing rough surfaces, reduced speed limits, and ongoing safety concerns.

The Cunningham Highway is a critical link for regional communities and freight operators, and the Crisafulli Government is backing it with real funding and a clear plan for a safer future for Queenslanders after the former Labor Government failed to deliver fixes for regional Queenslanders.

Major rehabilitation is scheduled to begin later this year, with works rolled out progressively to restore the highway and build resilience into one of Queensland’s most important transport corridors.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the Crisafulli Government was serious about fixing Labor’s road project backlog and putting safety back in the front seat for the state’s regional road network.

“For years, Queenslanders were left to deal with crumbling roads and temporary repairs,” Minister Mickelberg said.

“The Crisafulli Government is stepping up to properly rebuild the Cunningham Highway and make it safer for locals, freight operators, and anyone travelling through the region.

“This highway matters to the economy and to everyday Queenslanders, and we’re delivering the long‑term solutions Labor failed to provide.”

Member for Southern Downs James Lister said locals have been saying for years that the Cunningham Highway was being ignored while it continued to deteriorate under the former government.

“I thank the Crisafulli Government and Minister Brent Mickelberg for visiting the region, seeing the state of our roads firsthand, and then moving quickly to address long‑neglected sections,” Mr Lister said.

“These works are genuine long‑term repairs, not patch‑ups.

“The upgrades will fix the underlying drainage and stability issues, as well as cut down on the vehicle damage we’ve all been dealing with because of the deteriorated road surface.”
