58 new social homes for vulnerable Queenslanders in Moreton Bay
- Shovels hit the ground on new social housing project at Morayfield to deliver more vulnerable Queenslanders a place to call home.
- 58 social homes designed for elderly Queenslanders looking to downsize, with accessability and ease of living in mind.
- The Crisafulli Government is delivering a record pipeline of social and community housing to help fix a decade of decline under the former Government that led to Labor's Housing Crisis.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering a place to call home for more vulnerable Queenslanders, with construction underway on 58 social homes to provide much-needed housing supply in the City of Moreton Bay.
The mix of one and two-bedroom homes – delivered in partnership with Community Housing (Qld) Limited - are designed for older Queenslanders looking to downsize, freeing up larger social homes for families.
Half of the homes are designed with accessibility and ease of living in mind with wider hallways, step-free access, safer bathrooms and flexible layouts that support older Queenslanders, people with mobility needs and those wanting to age in place.
It is one of 11 projects supported through this partnership, which is set to deliver 469 social and affordable homes across Queensland.
This pipeline includes 121 social and affordable homes under construction at Redbank Plains and another 73 social homes across two sites at Waterford West.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering a record pipeline of social and community housing across the State, with a $5.6 billion investment over four years, that is laying the foundations to deliver 53,500 social and community homes by 2044.
The housing help is being delivered after a decade of under-investment from the former Labor Government, which failed to plan for Queensland’s growing population and added just 509 social homes, on average, per year.
There are now 5,838 social and affordable homes in construction or under contract across Queensland which is helping fix Labor’s Housing Crisis.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O’Connor said the Crisafulli Government was delivering a place to call home for more Queenslanders.
“We’ve already got more than 600 social and affordable homes in construction or under contract across Moreton Bay with more to come,” Minister O’Connor said.
“These duplexes in Morayfield are exactly the kind of homes we want to see more of to meet the needs of this fast-growing community.
“Not only will they provide secure, long-term housing for older Queenslanders, but it also means we can free up larger properties for families waiting on the social housing register.
“It’s yet another example of how we are working with community housing providers to deliver more vulnerable Queenslanders homes where they’re needed most.”
CHL's Queensland State Manager Carly Bairstow said that CHL was proud to partner with the Queensland Government to deliver the Morayfield project.
“Projects like this one provide safe, secure homes for seniors, which are close to transport and amenities, and help free up other larger properties that are hard to access for families who need them most,” Ms Bairstow said.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery welcomed the Queensland Government’s focus on increasing social housing locally.
“It is collaborative and innovative projects like this that will improve housing outcomes for the most vulnerable in our community.
“Although housing is a State remit, Council continues to work closely with all stakeholders, including the Government, on real solutions such as waiving development fees for social and affordable developments, and supportive housing, to help combat the effects of the national housing crisis in City of Moreton Bay.”
