Work will start next month on a $7.3 million project to upgrade a further 28.5km of the Hervey's Range Developmental Road between Townsville and Battery.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Steve Bredhauer today announced the awarding of the contract for the work to J J McDonald and Sons Engineering Pty Ltd.

He said the project delivered on the Beattie Government's commitment to regional jobs, job security and regional economic development.

Mr Bredhauer said the work would start about 70km west of Townsville at Devil's Marbles and extend to Ella Creek.

He said the construction would provide a sealed pavement and associated drainage.

"This project is part of an on-going program to upgrade the Hervey's Range Developmental Road," Mr Bredhauer said.

"It will allow people in regional centres and in North-West Queensland and the Gulf region better access to Townsville," he said.

"The Beattie Government recognises how important it is to be able to easily and safely access essential services no matter where people live in Queensland," Mr Bredhauer said.

"The project also will improve traffic safety, improve flood immunity and reduce travelling costs," Mr Bredhauer said.

Mr Bredhauer said bridging of Keelbottom, Boundary, Spring and Stockyard Creeks had just been completed with construction of the road approaches due for completion in August.

"Completing the sealing of this road has the support of both Dalrymple Shire Council and the City of Thuringowa and continues to have the support of the Upper Burdekin Progress Association," he said.
