Water security locked-in for Mossman

The Crisafulli Government has granted a new 2000ML (megalitres) water licence to Douglas Shire Council – a crucial step in supporting council to deliver a more resilient town water supply for the Mossman community.
The new licence will allow council to take water from the Mossman River, ensuring they will be ready to use their new water intake and storage infrastructure, which is expected to begin construction in early 2026.
This is another way the Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future and granting more water for our regions.
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said that the Crisafulli Government was continuing to deliver for the state’s local governments and support them to achieve better outcomes for their communities.
“Access to a secure water supply, no matter where you live in our state, is absolutely essential,” Minister Leahy said.
“We’ve been hard at work to deliver for Queensland councils and their communities to help create a better, more sustainable future for all.
“When it comes to real, effective progress, it’s not just about putting shovels in the ground, it’s also the enabling steps behind-the-scenes that reduce the roadblocks and ensure the infrastructure we build is ready to use.
“This new water licence for Douglas is helping us achieve exactly that for the Mossman community."
Member for Cook David Kempton said this additional 2,000 megalitres of water security was ensuring regional Queensland's growing communities and local industries have the reliable water they need now and into the future.
“The Crisafulli Government is delivering real, practical solutions for Far North Queensland, and this water will help future-proof Douglas Shire by supporting population growth, investment and long-term resilience," Mr Kempton said.
