The Honourable Ann Leahy
More than $226,000 to protect Winton from future floods
- $226,359 in funding approved for Winton Shire Council to investigate flood mitigation infrastructure options for the Winton pump station.
- Investment includes the design concept of a flood levee to protect Winton from future flood events and improve water security for the town.
- Funding is through the five-year $450 million Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Program to create stronger, safer and more resilient Queensland communities.
The Albanese and Crisafulli Governments will provide $226,359 for Winton Shire Council to build the town’s future resilience to flooding.
The funding will enable council to carry out a feasibility study into flood mitigation measures for the Winton pump station, including developing a concept design of a flood levee to safeguard water infrastructure and enhance the town’s water security during future flooding events.
The project, identified as a priority by Winton Shire Council, will be delivered under the $450 million Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Program (QRRRP).
The QRRRP is funded through efficiencies from the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and will support a range of local and state resilience initiatives.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the funding would help protect critical infrastructure and ensure water security for the town during future flood events.
“The Albanese Government continues to work closely with the Crisafulli Government to deliver stronger resilience and safer communities,” Minister McBain said.
“This investment is about planning ahead and ensuring that local residents are better prepared for when flood events occur.
“The Albanese Government will continue to support projects that safeguard communities like Winton and critical infrastructure.”
Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy said the funding would significantly boost Winton’s resilience to flooding.
“Just in the past week floodwaters were threatening Winton, highlighting why it’s essential to get this solution right,” Minister Leahy said.
“Our Government is committed to supporting the broader Winton community as it recovers from this recent flood, and also to build resilience into the future.
“This funding enables Winton Shire Council to develop a flood levee concept design to protect critical water infrastructure and improve water security. It also paves the way for future construction planning and cost estimation.
“The QRRRP is addressing critical resilience gaps for communities like Winton and supporting efforts to ensure we’re better prepared for the future.”
Under the QRRRP the Queensland and Australian Governments have approved $450 million to deliver projects that improve resilience and mitigate risk to communities across the state.
Winton Shire Council was recently activated to access DRFA funding after monsoonal rainfall caused flooding forcing road closures, isolation and impact to critical infrastructure.
The assistance will support councils’ response, clean-up and recovery, including emergency roadworks and repairs to essential public assets.
