Statement from the Attorney-General

The High Court of Australia has granted special leave to hear the appeal against the sentence imposed on the killer of Emma Lovell.

Emma's killer was sentenced to 14 years in detention, with 70 per cent to be served behind bars. 

The sentence was handed down under the former Labor government’s laws. Had the LNP’s Adult Crime, Adult Time regime been in place, the mandatory sentence would have been life imprisonment.

In August, Queensland's Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to 60 per cent, meaning the offender could walk free after just 8 years and 5 months.

As Attorney-General, I am determined to pursue all available legal options to seek justice for the Lovell family.

Emma Lovell was a loving mother whose life was brutally stolen on her own front lawn.

The future hearing date for the appeal has not yet been set and will be determined by the High Court.
