New social homes to deliver a place to call home for Mackay residents
- Crisafulli Government delivers record $5.6 billion investment in social and affordable homes across Queensland.
- 141 social and affordable homes in the Mackay-Whitsunday social and affordable housing pipeline.
- Construction underway on 18 social homes in Mackay.
- Crisafulli Government is delivering a better lifestyle through a stronger economy and a fresh start for Queensland.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering a place to call home for more Queenslanders in the Mackay-Whitsunday region, with 141 new social and affordable homes under contract or in construction.
This includes 18 social homes getting underway today in Mackay delivering 15, one-bedroom and three, two-bedroom units by the end of 2026.
The project will provide a safe and secure place to call home for vulnerable Queenslanders from the social housing register who are living in the region.
There are now more than 5,600 social and affordable homes in construction or under contract to be delivered across the State, including social and affordable homes across the Mackay-Whitsunday region.
- 30 social homes in Proserpine
- 32 social homes in Bowen
- 11 affordable homes in Moranbah.
The Crisafulli Government is ramping up the State’s housing pipeline, after the former Labor Government created a Housing Crisis by failing to plan for Queensland’s growing population and only added 509 social homes on average per year.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O’Connor said the Mackay project was part of the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to delivering 53,500 social and community homes by 2044.
“Projects like this one are vital to meeting the need for social housing for Mackay-Whitsunday locals waiting for a place to call home,” Minister O’Connor said.
“We’re ramping up construction across the State to deliver 2,000 social and community homes each year on average by the end of this term.
“Our record $5.6 billion statewide investment over the next four years into social community housing will ensure many more homes are on the way.
“We’re also empowering the community housing sector to deliver more homes for vulnerable people.
“This new model means community housing providers can apply for funding year-round – helping support a steady, long-term supply of new community homes to the regions.”
Member for Mackay Nigel Dalton said this pipeline of 141 social and affordable homes across the Mackay-Whitsunday region, and the 18 new homes now under construction is a significant step forward in supporting local residents after 33 homes have been delivered in the last 12 months.
“These 18 new social homes will be life-changing and provide stability for some of our most vulnerable locals,” Mr Dalton said.
“We’ll continue to grow the social and community housing pipeline to help fix Labor’s Housing Crisis. We’re taking real action to deliver housing outcomes for the people of Mackay.”
