The Honourable Brent Mickelberg
New causeway for the Gold Coast’s Mudgeeraba Creek to improve flood immunity
- The causeway over Mudgeeraba Creek will be replaced after sustaining damage during Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
- New causeway will be 2.5 metres higher than the existing structure, with construction of new pavement on both approaches to the causeway.
- Works will improve flood immunity on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road and reduce the likelihood of closures during wet weather events.
Work is set to start next year on building a higher and wider causeway over Mudgeeraba Creek on Gold Coast–Springbrook Road to improve flood immunity for local communities.
The existing causeway sustained damage during Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year, with the replacement structure to reduce the likelihood of closures during heavy rain and maintain access to Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook.
The new causeway will be 2.5 metres higher than the existing structure, with construction of new pavement on both approaches to the causeway.
The new causeway will also be constructed upstream of the current causeway, which will reduce impact to through traffic on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road.
Prior to works starting next year, telecommunication services in the vicinity of the creek will be relocated, with minor traffic impacts expected during these works.
The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
In addition to DRFA-funded works, additional funding has been provided by the Crisafulli Government to build the new structure higher.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said work on the new causeway is one of the many projects the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments are working on together to restore and rebuild the area.
“When Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred battered south-east Queensland, we said the Albanese Government would be there for the long-term recovery,” Minister McBain said.
“This work will limit the impact of floods and make a real difference to the people who live in and visit this beautiful part of the world.”
Federal Senator for Queensland, Murray Watt said this work is great news for the Gold Coast.
“Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred caused significant damage across the Coast, and the community is still feeling the impact.
“Once completed, the new causeway will make sure Gold Coasters can get to where they need to go much more safely and efficiently.”
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the project delivers on the Crisafulli Government’s election commitment to improve flood resilience along Gold Coast–Springbrook Road by raising causeway.
“Locals know all too well the disruption caused when Mudgeeraba Creek floods and forces the closure of this vital road link,” Minister Mickelberg said.
“This upgrade is about more than just infrastructure - it’s about protecting connectivity for the communities of Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook during severe weather.
“By building a higher, more resilient causeway, just like we said we would, we’re ensuring residents and visitors alike can travel safely and reliably, even in challenging conditions. This is a smart investment in the future of our region.”
Member for Mudgeeraba, Ros Bates said the upgrade was a win for locals who’ve waited too long for a safer, more reliable crossing.
“This causeway has been a constant frustration for families, especially when heavy rain cuts off access and isolates parts of our community,” Ms Bates said.
“I’ve stood alongside residents, listened to their concerns, and fought to make sure this upgrade was prioritised.
“This is about keeping our community connected - rain, hail, or shine. Locals deserve peace of mind knowing they can get to work, school, or the shops safely, no matter the weather.”
