Next steps to deliver the Wangetti Trail: Much loved track to be reopened

  • The Crisafulli Government begins work on the reopening of the pivotal Twin Bridges track from Wangetti to Port Douglas.
  • The former Labor Government left the iconic track closed since 2020 and ignored calls from the community for it to be reopened.
  • Works on the Ellis Beach to Wangetti link to commence in early 2026.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland’s future with more ecotourism to take advantage of 2032 and beyond.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland’s future and making our State the leading destination for ecotourism, with work beginning to open the critical trail from Wangetti to Port Douglas.

Following years of local demand that was ignored by the former Labor Government during their decade of decline, the Crisafulli Government has engaged contractors to reopen the Twin Bridges track – between Wangetti and Port Douglas.

The Twin Bridges Track was once a much-loved community trail but has been closed since 2020 due to bridge deterioration and cyclone damage.

The reopening of the Twin Bridges Track does not replace the original route of the Wangetti Trail, but instead delivers another trail for locals and visitors to enjoy sooner.

Works on the Ellis Beach to Wangetti link will commence as soon as the wet season ends in early 2026 – and once both works are complete – walkers and hikers will be able to enjoy the best of Far North Queensland’s natural wonder by going from Palm Cove to Port Douglas.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland’s future with more ecotourism, more events and more flight connections in a bold 20-year tourism strategy – Destination 2045  to take advantage of 2032 and beyond.

This includes delivering $40 million for 45 new ecotourism experiences by 2045 to showcase Queensland’s world-class natural environment, and make our State the leading destination for ecotourism, starting with Wangetti Trail.

Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said the Crisafulli Government was delivering the fresh start Queenslanders voted for, exactly as promised.

“The Crisafulli Government is doing what we said we would do, delivering a trail that is not only the envy of the world, but which meets the needs of the locals living on its doorstep,” Minister Powell said.

“Residents have been crying out for the reopening of their much-loved Twin Bridges Track for years – it fell on deaf ears under Labor, but the Crisafulli Government is proud to deliver it.

“Reopening the Twin Bridges Track brings the future stage of connecting Wangetti to Port Douglas forward, while we continue to explore additional routes to showcase this stunning part of Tropical North Queensland. This is a win for the community, the environment and tourism.”

Assistant Minister for Tourism and Member for Barron River Bree James said the Crisafulli Government was delivering for the Far North Queensland community.

“Under the former Government, Wangetti became the most expensive footpath in Australia,” Assistant Minister James said.

“Our collaborative approach is delivering a trail network that balances community input, environmental stewardship, and a strong visitor economy for our region.

“The Wangetti Trail will be a jewel in Queensland’s tourism crown and is a signature of our 45 By 45 ecotourism commitment under Destination 2045.”

Member for Cook David Kempton said he was proud to see action on the trail after the long Labor stalemate.

“Labor spent years failing the people of Far North Queensland while overseeing Wangetti from Brisbane,” Mr Kempton said.

“After wasting almost half the budget on a mere fraction of the track, we can understand why locals lost hope.

“But to see the progress, including a connection between Wangetti and Port Douglas, after just one year of a Crisafulli Government, I think many will be excited by this next step.”
