The Crisafulli Government is paying tribute to the 60 Queensland firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Flags at all fire stations across the State will be flown at half-mast today to commemorate Firefighters Remembrance Day, with a minute’s silence observed at 10:00am.
Ceremonies held across Queensland will feature the reading of the Firefighters Prayer, with a bell rung for each of the 60 lives lost since the start of firefighting in Queensland in 1877.
Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers Ann Leahy said it was a poignant reminder of the dangers facing Queensland’s firefighters every time they answered a call.
“Queensland’s firefighters respond to dangerous situations on a daily basis – without hesitation. Today reminds us not just of the risks they face, but of the extraordinary courage and selflessness that defines their service,” Minister Leahy said.
“Our firefighters risk paying the ultimate sacrifice for Queensland. We honour their bravery, their commitment to protecting our communities, and the sacrifices they and their families have made.”
QFD Commissioner Steve Smith said today was an important day where firefighters and their loved ones pause, reflect and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as acknowledge those who continue to serve or have served in the past.
“Our firefighters put themselves in harm’s way on a regular basis and, even with their extensive training and specialised equipment, they still face inherent dangers,” Mr Smith said.
“Firefighters will risk their own lives in the name of saving the lives of others – that is an incredibly selfless act that we should all be grateful for.
“Flags at fire stations will fly at half-mast today as we stand together in a minute's silence to honour the 60 firefighters we have lost and recognise those who serve the communities day in and day out. We honour them and sincerely thank them for their service.”
