The Star Gold Coast licence suspension deferred

  • The Star Gold Coast licence suspension deferred to 30 September 2026.
  • Deferral considers latest review into The Star’s remediation progress.
  • Special Manager also extended to provide ongoing independent oversight of The Star.

The Crisafulli Government has deferred the suspension of The Star Gold Coast’s casino licence to 30 September 2026, in line with the most recent independent advice from the Special Manager.

The Crisafulli Government’s decision has been informed by The Star’s progress across priority remediation measures, which included consideration of a report produced by independent Special Manager, Mr Nicholas Weeks.

In his report, Mr Weeks acknowledged that The Star has made steady progress on its remediation efforts, including those measures identified as key priorities.

However, while The Star continues to deliver on outstanding remediation measures, Mr Weeks noted in his report that progress has been slower than anticipated, due to The Star’s recent financial challenges and uncertainty.

The 12-month deferral will provide The Star with the opportunity to continue to implement and embed key deliverables under its remediation plan.

Without government intervention, The Star’s Gold Coast casino licence was due to be suspended for 90 days, from 30 September 2025.

Mr Weeks has also been extended in his role as Special Manager until 30 September 2026 to ensure continued independent oversight of The Star’s casino operations in Queensland.

Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Jarrod Bleijie said the Crisafulli Government had set clear expectations for The Star.

“The Crisafulli Government has the highest standards when it comes to the integrity of casino operations in Queensland,” the Acting Attorney-General said.

“We will continue to closely monitor The Star’s remediation progress to ensure key milestones are met.

“This deferral does not prevent us from taking immediate action should The Star fail to meet its remediation obligations.”
