Shovels in the ground on 200-home Southport supportive accommodation project
- Construction underway on social and affordable homes with in-built support services for Queenslanders in need on the Gold Coast.
- Southport Supportive Housing Project being delivered through State and Federal government partnership.
- Part of Queensland Government’s plan to deliver 53,500 social and community homes by 2044.
A major milestone has been reached with construction underway on one of the Gold Coast’s largest social and affordable housing projects – a much-needed accommodation model that will put support services at the doorstep of future tenants.
The highrise supportive housing project is being delivered by the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund and the Queensland Government.
The Southport Supportive Housing Project will include a mix of studio, one and two-bedroom apartments, with wraparound support services on site.
Construction has commenced on the project, which is due for completion mid-2027.
The first tenants are expected to move in by late 2027 and will include people at risk of homelessness or sleeping rough on the Gold Coast.
These units are part of the Crisafulli Government’s pipeline of more than 560 social and affordable homes currently in construction or under contract to be delivered across the Gold Coast region with more on the way.
A community housing provider will be engaged to manage the project, as well as a specialist homelessness service providing support services for tenants.
The vision for the supportive housing project was developed with insights from the community housing sector and people who have experienced homelessness.
Federal Special Envoy for Social Housing and Homelessness, Josh Burns, said the project was about more than providing safe homes.
“The project creates a genuine pathway out of homelessness,” Mr Burns said.
“With access to onsite wraparound support services, it offers the stability and care that will transform lives.
“Through the Housing Australia Future Fund, the Albanese Government is proud to partner with the Queensland Government on this innovative model of supportive housing.
“This 200-home project exemplifies the kind of collaborative approach we need to support Australians in need and those at risk of homelessness across the country – with all levels of Government, community housing providers and support services working together.”
Minister for Housing Sam O’Connor said the Crisafulli Government was ramping up social and affordable housing construction for the growing Gold Coast region.
“We are working with all levels of government, and with the community housing sector, to deliver more homes for Queenslanders in need,” Minister O’Connor said.
“Importantly, this project will provide 200 vulnerable Gold Coast households with much more than a safe and secure roof over their heads.
“It will also offer the wraparound support they need to avoid falling through the cracks, such as help to find employment and to live independently.”
