Minister for Housing, Local Government and Planning and Minister for Public Works
The Honourable Meaghan Scanlon

  • Builder appointed for Miles Government’s 200-home Southport Supportive Accommodation project
  • Part of Miles Government’s Homes for Queenslanders plan to deliver one million more homes, including 53,500 social homes
  • Project at risk under LNP who cut social housing construction by 90 per cent, sent homes backwards by 428

Work on the Miles Government’s 200-home Southport supportive housing project will begin early next year with Icon Constructions announced as the builder.

It will include around 200 high-rise units for Queenslanders in need, including people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The design is a housing-first model with space for wraparound support located on the Southport Priority Development Area, identified during the government’s land audit.

The project is being developed in consultation with the community housing sector and people with lived experiences of homelessness.

Procurement of a community housing provider and specialist homelessness service will also be undertaken.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

“Our housing plan is about helping all Queenslanders, no matter who you are – first homebuyer, renter or someone experiencing homelessness.

“Housing and homelessness services on the Gold Coast told me about the demand not just for social housing but wraparound support. That’s why I secured this project.

“The Southport site will bring with it the potential to provide on-site supports for people who need additional help to live independently.

“While we’re actually building and unlocking more social and affordable homes, the LNP have shown their true colours, opposing housing in our city at every turn.

“The LNP have a history of cutting social and affordable housing and will cut again if given the chance.”
