A Brisbane-based dessert and savoury food manufacturer has officially opened its new state-of-the-art AI-powered facility in Acacia Ridge, which will increase its capabilities for food production and grow the workforce.

Priestley’s Gourmet Delights are upskilling existing employees and increasing staff numbers by a projected 56 by 2026.

The Miles Government has backed the Brisbane manufacturer, with a Made in Queensland Round 4 grant of $2.5 million to purchase automation equipment which has helped to on-shore the production of one of their key delights, the lava cake.

This upgrade has created 21 new jobs including 12 women and an additional 30 new jobs as part of the business expansion. The new capability also means they have been able to increase product packing rates, reduce factory bottlenecks and reduce costs significantly.

The bespoke system has been built by Mexx Engineering, a local engineering firm that specialises in robotic assembly systems and advanced manufacturing lines.

Made in Queensland is a highly successful grant program, that has helped over 100 businesses across Queensland, over 5 rounds, creating and supportive over 6000 jobs. The Made in Queensland grant program forms part of the suite of measures implemented by the Miles Government which sees over $207 million invested into Queensland manufacturers and support programs.

Manufacturing Minister Glenn Butcher attended the official opening of the facility this morning and says it is vital businesses receive the support they need to capitalise on advanced manufacturing opportunities.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Manufacturing, Glenn Butcher:

“Queensland manufacturers are doing amazing things and that is no more evident than right here at Priestley’s Gourmet.  A business that is continuing to innovate with advanced manufacturing technology.

We know that consumers want to buy products made here in Queensland and we know that the Made in Queensland stamp matters. It means more jobs in manufacturing and increased capabilities.

“I am thrilled to be here at the opening of Priestley’s new manufacturing site, a state-of-the-art facility that has allowed them to on shore the production of their lava cakes from New Zealand to right here in Acacia Ridge.

“Our plan for manufacturing in this state is about providing our manufactures with the support they need to get on with the job, so they can reach the next level.

“This is a stark contrast to the LNP, who when in government, cut industry support programs, which resulted in thousands of job losses.”

Quotes attributable to Acacia Ridge MP, Leeanne Enoch:

“Priestley’s has been around for more than 25 years - they know their business and their customers.

“Being able to scale up and streamline the business with this funding is an exciting, big step for them.

“It is fantastic to see they have made a home in my electorate so they can continue to manufacture their products for years to come.”

Quotes attributable to Priestley’s Gourmet Delights CEO, Xanny Christophersen:

“It’s fantastic to be at the helm of such an innovative company. As the niece of the founder, I’ve watched the business grow over the years and our new facility is testament not only to her drive but the hard work of all of our employees.

“The technology we’re harnessing will allow us to boost productivity while also enabling us to grow our people and support them to upskill. This project will create a substantial number of new jobs for Queenslanders, as well as add to the state’s economy.

“This increased productivity means that we’re able to retail an exciting new range of products directly to consumers for the first time - meaning they can indulge in a sweet treat whenever they feel like it.”
