Developing a digital solution to make their schools better places to teach, learn and play is the task for all Year 3-10 students keen to participate in the 7th Premier’s Coding Challenge.

The annual Challenge aims to encourage student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

This year’s competition theme is #digitalinnovationqld.

Winners receive a technology prize from a $15,000 value prize pool and a framed certificate signed by the Premier and the Minister for Education at an awards ceremony on 12 November 2024.

Students can work as individuals or as a pair to enter the Challenge by submitting an app, a game, or a website, along with a short video explaining or evaluating their entry.

In 2023, 424 students from 114 schools submitted entries.

The Challenge opened in March with entries closing on 2 September, giving students six months to develop and submit their entries.

Quotes attributable to the Premier Steven Miles:

“We want students from right across Queensland to jump on board and take up the Challenge.

“It doesn’t matter whether you attend school in the city, a rural town or even in remote locations – technology is proving to be the game changer for solving problems and we want you to help us identify and solve some challenges.

“Here is your chance to effect positive change through developing either an app, a game or a website.

“This is a great opportunity to not only show the world what you can do with technology but also an opportunity to use technology to solve some challenges facing your school or wider community.”

Quotes attributable to Education Minister Di Farmer:

“Our schools provide amazing opportunities for our students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and here is the chance to demonstrate how this great education can be used to create something creative and helpful.

“We had a record response last year and I’m hoping that this year even more records can be broken.

“With jobs now and in the future requiring science, technology, engineering and mathematics capabilities we want every child to know how to be secure online and have access to a world-class education that equips them for the jobs of the future.”
