Two new magistrates for regional Queensland

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath has announced two new magistrates for regional Queensland.

Rockhampton solicitor Philippa Beckinsale will be appointed to the Rockhampton Magistrates Court; Townsville barrister Viviana Keegan will be posted to Toowoomba Magistrates Court for a year before returning to Townsville Magistrates Court.

“These latest appointments recognise the strength of the profession across regional Queensland and demonstrate our commitment to delivering justice across the State,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Both are well-respected lawyers with long and varied careers in the legal profession.

“Each possesses the legal skill and knowledge, experience and temperament required to serve as judicial officers of this State,” she said.

Philippa Beckinsale was admitted as a solicitor 27 years ago after receiving a Bachelor of Laws from University of Queensland.  She is currently a Sessional Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, previously with the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal. She is an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.  She also has worked in private practice across a wide range of areas.

Viviana Keegan has been a barrister for 18 years, achieving a Bachelor of Laws from James Cook University in Townsville.  She has worked as a Crown Prosecutor and also at the private bar where she practiced in civil litigation, criminal law and family law. She has experience in appellate work, is a Nationally Accredited Mediator and has volunteered her services at pro bono legal service LawRight.

“I congratulate  each of them on their appointment to these vital roles,” Mrs D’Ath said.

Philippa Beckinsale and Viviana Keegan will take up their new positions on Monday, 11 June 2018.
