Education Minister Kate Jones and Member for Stretton Duncan Pegg officially opened new $5.3 million classroom and administration facilities at Calamvale Special School today.
Ms Jones said the new two-storey building, which was built in time for the start of the 2017 school year, provided much-needed additional capacity for the growing school.
“I’m so pleased to be here today with the Member for Stretton Duncan Pegg to open these new facilities for the students and staff of Calamvale State Special School,” she said.
“This project is part of our Government’s record $667 million infrastructure program in Queensland state schools.
“This new facility is the school’s largest construction project since the school opened in 1985.
“The building provides four classrooms, therapy spaces and two life skills areas areas on the top floor, along with administration areas, conference facilities and meeting spaces on the ground floor.
“Delivered by Dickinson Construction, the building allows the school to cater for up to 175 students.
“With enrolments currently around 140 students, the new building provides additional capacity for the school to grow over time.”
Mr Pegg said the project also involved the construction of a new bus turnaround facility, car park and covered walkways.
“I’d like to thank the school community and the Parents and Citizen’s Association for their input into the planning process for this new building,” he said.
“The project included a complete reconfiguration of the bus turn-around area, making use of an adjacent vacant block which was previously owned by Calamvale Community College.”
Principal of Calamvale Special School, Tom Byrne, said the school community was excited to have a new purpose-built facility to meet student needs.
“The new building provides a dedicated senior learning area which will bring new opportunities to help our students become self-reliant within the community,” he said.
