Suburb of Charters Towers City officially named

The central business district of Charters Towers has been officially named the suburb of Charters Towers City by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines.
Minister for Natural Resources Andrew Cripps said the Charters Towers Chamber of Commerce and Mines submitted the place name request to the department with overwhelming support from residents and businesses.
“I commend local residents and businesses for supporting the bid to identify Charters Towers’ central business district,” Mr Cripps said.
“The suburb of Charters Towers City replaces the suburb of Lissner and includes parts of the suburbs of Queenton, Grand Secret and Richmond Hill.”
Charters Towers City has been officially added to the department’s Place Names database and would now be recognised as a suburb by Australia Post, Telstra and Emergency Services.
The Department of Natural Resources and Mines administers the Place Names Act 1994 which guides the steps for altering boundaries and naming areas and geographic features.
Queensland place name plan QPN1179, illustrating the location of the suburb is available from the department’s Townsville office, State Government Building, Level 3, 187-209 Stanley Street, Townsville and will be on display at the Charters Towers Regional Council office on Mosman Street and at the council library, 130 Gill Street, Charters Towers City.
