The Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law

The Newman Government has today announced the new Supreme and District Law Courts will be named after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Jarrod Bleijie said a representation had been made to Her Majesty requesting approval for the new CBD courthouse to be named in her honour.

“In this year of the Diamond Jubilee, it is important to recognise the dedication and service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia for the past 60 years,” Mr Bleijie said.

“Queensland was named after Her Majesty’s great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, who was the only other British monarch to have achieved a diamond reign in 1897.

“The day we learned Buckingham Palace had assented to our request to name this landmark building the Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law, was one of great happiness.

“This new building represents a significant investment in the future of law and order in our great State.

“This building, the only one of its kind in Australia, will house both the Supreme and District Courts and the Supreme Court library.

“The millions spent on the courts will result in the delivery of services to all Queenslanders and will improve the operation of the State’s judicial system.

“It will deliver faster, safer, smarter justice with increased trial capacity, tighter security and digital technology.

“The Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law will also provide enhanced facilities for victims of crime, witnesses, jurors, lawyers, judges and members of the public.”

The official opening of The Queensland Elizabeth II Courts of Law will take place tommorrow, Friday 3 August at 9.30am.
